Research and Development Unit (R&D)
- R&D is comprised of one police sergeant and five police officers.
- R&D is part of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB), within the Administrative Subdivision.
- The R&D offices are located in Columbus Police Headquarters, and can be contacted at (614) 645-4606, or by email at Research&[email protected].
- The hours of operation are 7 am – 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Research and Development Unit is to produce policies, procedures, and written work product that enable Division personnel to provide the citizens of Columbus the highest level of professional police services. The R&D Unit is dedicated to completing all projects following set standards of quality, and produce work product with the end-user as the primary focus. The R&D Unit also strives to reflect the Division’s professionalism and excellence whenever fulfilling requests from other units or outside agencies.
R&D is responsible for:
- Formulating, maintaining, and distributing Division Directives, the Aid to Enforcement Manual, Supervisor’s Manual, and the Division’s Annual Report.
- Maintaining the online Field Report Manual.
- Distributing and maintaining the Patrol Standard Operating Procedures Manual, the Criminal Complaint Manual, Emergency Operations Manual, and the Arrest, Search, and Seizure Manual.
- Compiling statistical data into report form for use by police management for decisions in police operations, including the annual Patrol Workload Assessment, and Status of the Division report.
- Researching best policies and procedures for police operations.
- Responding to requests from other agencies and the public for statistical information or policy issues.
- Responding to survey requests from outside agencies and educational organizations.
- Researching, formulating, and maintaining Division forms.
- Reviewing and assessing the impact on the Division’s ability to effectively provide police services for proposed zoning and annexation requests.
- Responding to requests for the Columbus*Stats Dashboards.
